Piiholo Ranch, Maui Horseback Riding
We invite you to live the legacy of the
Baldwin Family Tradition. We’ll share with you our experiences of five
generations of cattle ranching and caring for the land. Piiholo Ranch
borders the “Paniolo Town” of Makawao and lies at the edge of an Upcountry
rainforest. Owned and operated by Peter Baldwin and his family, Piiholo is
a working cattle ranch filled with the flora and fauna of Hawaii’s native
eco-systems. Piiholo Ranch provides a horseback riding adventure with
plenty of open space to move freely and view spectacular sights from the
2000-foot elevation of Haleakala. The days that the ranch moves cattle
provide a unique opportunity not found on other horseback trail rides.
This happens two or three days a week. If you’re interested in
experiencing a cattle drive, you should call ahead to schedule your ride
on one of these days. Peter Baldwin and his ranch hands call the cattle
through the gates, and you, too, can be a part of moving the whole herd
from one pasture to another! Along with identifying native trees, plants
and birds, the Piiholo guides can take you to see a water delivery tunnel
built in the late 1800’s and will tell you tales of ranching and paniolo
(cowboy) history on Maui. Each one has their own stories to tell. The
Hawaiian translation of our ranch’s name, Piiholo, is actually two words.
According to a respected Hawaiian language expert on Maui, pi‘i means to
ascend, to become swift, or to mount. Holo means movement, or to move on,
as in ride. For this horseback riding activity, we take piiholo to mean
“to mount a horse and ride on.”
